Welcome!

The Rock Creek Chamber Players are an open-ended group of musicians whose main
joint activity is a free public concert series held mainly at Christ Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Bethesda; from 1993 to 2001 the concerts usually were held in the Clinical
Center of the National Institutes of Health, also in Bethesda.  The Players’ series concerts
have taken place almost every month since June, 1993, except in December and, once a
year, in a late summer month.

Ordinarily each section of a Rock Creek Chamber Players program will call for a different
combination of instruments and/or voices.  For the fourteenth- to twenty-first-century
works which formed the repertoire heard in our 2008-09 season, solo or chamber
performing forces ranged from one to seventeen musicians.  Along with conventional
chamber groups (string quartet, violin and piano, piano trio) and household-name
composers (the three B’s, Mozart, Chopin), odd combinations (flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass
clarinet, violin, and double bass; piano six hands; French horn, clarinet, three violins, and
viola) and less familiar composers (Trimble, Bozza, Handl) frequently were programmed.

Usually performers are recruited afresh for each section of a program.  Thus, even when
different works on a single program of the Players happen to call for the same voice or
instrument, the performer may change from work to work.  During the 2008-09 season
one solo singer, twenty-four ensemble singers, and one singer who appeared in both
roles, were heard, as well as seventy-seven solo or ensemble (or both) instrumentalists,
including twenty-one pianists, eighteen violinists, fourteen ‘cellists, six hornists, and five
oboists.  One choral conductor brought all the ensemble singers: a women’s vocal group
in one concert of the season and a mixed vocal group in another.  Other guest ensembles
included three groups of instrumentalists. Performers ranged in age from nine to eighty
plus. Some participants were heard in many or most programs; others made only a single
solo or group appearance.

The Rock Creek Chamber Players work without an artistic director.  Further information on
the group and its concerts is available from Fred Shoup, program coordinator (tel.
