Welcome!
The Rock Creek Chamber Players are an open-ended group of musicians whose main joint
activity is a free public concert series held from 1993 to 2001 at the Clinical Center of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) and since then mainly at Christ Lutheran Church in
Bethesda. The Players' series concerts have taken place almost every month since
September, 1993--sometimes twice a month--, except in August and December.
Ordinarily each section of a Rock Creek Chamber Players program will call for a different
combination of instruments and/or (occasionally) voices. For the seventeenth- to
twenty-first-century works that formed the repertoire heard in our 2005-06 concerts, solo or
chamber performing forces ranged from one to eight musicians. Along with conventional
chamber groups (string quartet, trio sonata, piano trio, wind quintet) and household-name
composers (the three B's, Mozart,Chopin), odd combinations (oboe, violin, viola, 'cello and
double bass; violin, viola and two 'celli; flute, string quartet, and piano) and less celebrated
composers (Moniuszko, Tailleferre, Tarrega) frequently were programmed.
Usually performers are recruited afresh for each section of a program. Thus, even when
different works on a single program of the Players happen to call for the same instrument,
the performer may change from work to work. During the 2005-06 season, eighty
instrumentalists participated in the regular series concerts, including twenty-two violinists,
eighteen 'cellists, eighteen pianists, six oboists, one 'cellist-pianist, and one
'cellist-conductor; two solo singers, five ensemble singers, and two singers who performed
both as soloists and in ensemble, participated as well. These eighty-nine performers (some,
professionals; some, capable amateurs) ranged in age from twelve to eighty-eight. Some
participated in many or even most programs; others made only a single solo or ensemble
appearance. Three guest ensembles and a pickup chamber orchestra were among those
who contributed their talents to the concerts.
