Welcome!
The Rock Creek Chamber Players are an open-ended group of musicians whose principal
joint activity is a free public concert series held mainly at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Bethesda. From 1993 to 2001 the concerts usually were held in the Clinical Center of the
National Institutes of Health, also in Bethesda. The Players’ series concerts have taken
place almost every month since September 1993, except in August and December, which
usually have been bye months.
Ordinarily each section of a Rock Creek Chamber Players program will call for a different
combination of instruments and/or voices. For the ninth- to twenty-first-century works
which formed the repertoire heard in our 2007-2008 season, solo or chamber performing
forces ranged from one to twenty-four musicians. Along with conventional chamber groups
(string quartet, violin and piano, piano trio) and household-name composers (the three B’s,
Mozart, Chopin), odd combinations (flute/piccolo, viola and double bass; three violins, one
viola, and two ‘cellos; four B flat clarinets) and less familiar composers (Woodcock, Brouwer,
Schulhoff) frequently were programmed.
Usually performers are recruited afresh for each section of a program. Thus, even when
different works on a single program of the players happen to call for the same voice or
instrument, the performer may change from work to work. During the 2007-2008 season five
solo singers and nine ensemble singers were heard, along with seventy-one solo or
ensemble (or both) instrumentalists, including twenty-three violinists, fourteen ‘cellists,
thirteen pianists, five clarinetists, and two guitarists; two conductors also participated.
These performers (some, professionals; some, capable amateurs) ranged in age from twelve
to circa ninety. Some participants were heard in many or most programs; others made only
a single solo or ensemble appearance. Four guest ensembles were among those who
contributed their talents to the concerts.
The Rock Creek Chamber Players work without an artistic director. Further information on
the group and its concerts is available from Fred Shoup, program coordinator (tel. 202/337-
